Import season has started
Last week the supply of Spanish product from Almeria for clock sales started again. ZON anticipates a lower tomato supply this winter with Turkish and Italian tomatoes on the auction clock.
At ZON, the supply of Spanish vegetables for the auction clock kicked off in week 41 with the first aubergines and string beans. "In other years, we started in week 43/44, but because many Dutch growers stop earlier or their volumes decrease sharply, we started earlier. We will start in the coming weeks, based on the availability of our own Dutch growers , the import season of the other products also. For example, the volumes of Dutch peppers and courgettes will decrease earlier than last year," says clock sales manager Els van Herpen. The demand for Spanish vegetables is high. "Everyone is attracted to certain products, but due to the hot summer, the Spanish supply of bell peppers and tomatoes, among other things, is a bit later. ZON, for example, would like to start with orange bell peppers, because our Dutch supply has stopped, but we were not able to make the switch to Spanish orange peppers, because they were not yet available," says Els. She expects to be able to offer a wide Spanish range through the auction clock again this season. "The cooperatives we work with were very satisfied with the cooperation last season. However, the volumes that ZON receives depend on the demand and the market situation in both Spain and the Netherlands."

There may be an expansion in the Spanish clock range this year, but according to Els, talks are currently underway. "We are getting expansion from suppliers in the open ground segment and are also trying to expand volumes of the existing product lines." To guarantee the quality of the Spanish vegetables, ZON again has an inspector in Spain to inspect the products of the cooperating cooperatives on location until spring. This year, the Spanish vegetables will not only be delivered in the well-known black box, but also in a new ZON box at customer request. The first Spanish aubergines in the new packaging have now arrived.
"The high energy prices have major consequences for the illuminated tomato cultivation in the Netherlands. A large part of the illuminated production will also disappear at ZON. In Spain, the acreage of tomatoes has risen slightly again this year, but has fallen each time in recent years. We have anticipated the expected shortage by expanding our clock supply with vine tomatoes from Turkey and vine tomatoes, cherry vine tomatoes and cherry plum vine tomatoes from Sicily, Italy. These will be offered for auction from November," concludes Els. From 7 November, auctions will take place from the new auction hall within the new main building. The clock sales manager has not yet noticed any effects for ZON of FruitMasters' decision to stop clock sales in Geldermalsen at the end of this year.
